Building a Marketing Budget When You Don't Have Historical Data
New brands and new markets rarely come with the luxury of historical performance data to plan around. That doesn't mean the budget has to be a guess — it just means the inputs come from slightly different places.
Start from category benchmarks, not hope
Industry-level benchmarks for CPMs, click-through rates, and typical conversion rates in your category give you a reasonable starting estimate, even without your own historical data to lean on.
Size your test budget to reach a real decision
A budget too small to generate meaningful conversion volume will produce noise, not insight — and noise is a poor basis for a bigger spending decision. It's usually better to run a shorter, properly-funded test than a longer, underfunded one.
Plan for a learning phase, not instant efficiency
The first few weeks of any new account should be treated as a data-gathering phase. Judging a brand-new campaign against the same efficiency bar as an optimized, mature account sets an unrealistic expectation from day one.
