How to Know If Your Brand Positioning Actually Works
Brand positioning can sound compelling in an internal meeting and still fail to resonate the moment it reaches an actual customer. There are a few honest ways to check whether it's actually working, rather than just assuming it is.
Can customers repeat it back in their own words?
If customers describe your brand using language that echoes your intended positioning, it's landing. If their description is completely disconnected from what you're trying to communicate, the positioning isn't reaching them the way it's intended to.
Does it hold up against your actual competitors?
Positioning that could apply equally well to any competitor in your category isn't really positioning — it's a generic category description. Genuine positioning should make sense specifically because of who else is in the market.
Does your messaging consistently reflect it?
Positioning that exists only on a strategy document, disconnected from actual ad copy, website content, and packaging, isn't really in the market yet — it needs to show up consistently everywhere a customer encounters the brand.
