Why Engagement Rate Alone Doesn't Tell You the Full Story
Engagement rate is a genuinely useful metric, but treating it as the single measure of social media success misses a lot of what actually matters to the business behind the account.
Engagement doesn't automatically mean intent
A post can generate plenty of likes and comments without moving anyone closer to becoming a customer. Entertainment value and commercial value aren't the same thing, even though they can overlap.
Look at what happens after the engagement
Click-throughs to the website, profile visits, and follows from engaged accounts tell a more complete story than the engagement number alone. Engagement that doesn't lead anywhere is a weaker signal than it looks.
Tie social metrics back to a business outcome
Whether that's leads, sales, or measurable brand awareness lift, connecting social performance to an actual business metric — even loosely — keeps the channel accountable to more than just its own internal numbers.
